Your AC is on, the fan is blowing, but the air isn't cold. Here are the 8 most common reasons — and which ones you can fix yourself.
Nothing is worse on a Miami summer afternoon than an air conditioner that's running but not actually cooling your home. Before calling a technician, check these eight common causes.
1. Dirty Air Filter
A clogged filter restricts airflow over the evaporator coil. Replace it if it's gray or visibly clogged.
2. Low Refrigerant
Refrigerant doesn't "run out" — if it's low, there's a leak somewhere. This requires an EPA 608 certified technician.
3. Frozen Evaporator Coil
Turn the system to "fan only" mode for 2–3 hours to thaw, then call a tech if it refreezes.
4. Dirty Condenser Coils
Gently spray the outdoor unit fins with a garden hose to remove debris.
5. Failed Capacitor
One of the most common repairs in South Florida. A $80–$150 repair.
6. Thermostat Issues
Check that it's set to "cool," setpoint is below room temperature, and batteries are fresh.
